I have been into town today and noticed that by the George Eliot statue the council’s so called Christmas illuminations have started to be put up.
I asked a members question at Full Council last year with a view to getting the Christian content replaced. This would not bring any extra outlay bcause I simply wanted the current lights to ve replaced as they reached the end of their usefulness.
My reply from the leader of the council was that the Christian content had been removed with the agreement of Labour and Conservative groups so that no-one would be offended by such a display od Christianity. They had decided that to be more unclusive the depictiona of the nativity story would be replaced by snowflakes and groups of shooting stars. This would offend no-one and be more inclusive.
This upset me very much!
Take a look at the ‘Christmas’ lights next time you are in town and ask yourself if you would prefer Christmas to be recognised as a Christian celebration.
I am not for a second knocking the beliefs of others. I am simply suggesting that when the hypocritical council leader announces the switch on of the Christmas lights there should actually be some Christianity on display. Either that or rename them as the Winterfest illuminations or something else that may be more appropriate.
My suggestion would be the Judas illuminations as they have sold out Christianity but seek the benefit of the commercial aspects. If you have any suggestions I would like to read them in the comments section.
